Session 1: Women Who Lead - Speaker Bios
Lucy van Oldenbarneveld
Lucy van Oldenbarneveld is the host of CBC News At Six in Ottawa. Previously, Lucy's work with CBC Radio has taken her from the Yukon, where she was host/producer of the afternoon show in Whitehorse, to Ottawa where she was Field Reporter and Friday host of Ottawa Morning. Lucy has worked in the Netherlands, China, and as a host, producer and reporter with Deutsche Welle World Service Radio based in Cologne, Germany. While there she worked on a number of high-profile stories, including pieces on the Iraqi hostages in Berlin, the Al-Qaeda cells in Hamburg, an in-depth look at the gun culture in Germany, and the floods that ravaged central Europe in the summer of 2002. She was also Deutsche Welle's radio and television correspondent at the G8 summit in Kananaskis.
In the summer of 2003 Lucy took a leave of absence to travel to Africa to teach a radio skills course to people who work in the Afrinet radio network. It's a station based on information programming, while most radio in Africa relies mainly on music. Her work took her to Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. And just last year, Lucy taught journalism at the National University of Rwanda in Butare as part of Carleton University's Rwanda Initiative. She blogged about her experience for Ottawa Morning.
Originally from Hamilton, Lucy has a degree in Political Studies from Queens University. She has run her own consulting company, and was part of a comedy troupe that wrote and produced a two-hour live show of satire and music. She speaks English and Dutch.
