The Sara Kirke Award for Woman Entrepreneurship sponsored by Carleton University
February 24, 2009

Submit your nominations today!

SPROTT School of Business Carleton University Centre for Research and Education on Women and Work

The Sara Kirke Award for Woman Entrepreneurship is presented to the woman who has shown the most outstanding technological innovation and corporate leadership -- leadership that has significantly expanded the frontiers of Canada's advanced technology industry. The purpose of the Award is to celebrate innovation, entrepreneurship and create positive role models for women. http://www.catawit.ca/Mission_Vision/Sara_Kirk/

This year's Sara Kirke Award is being co-sponsored by the Centre for Research and Education on Women and Work and the Sprott School of Business at Carleton University. Dr. Roseann Runte, President of Carleton, will present this year's award at the CATA Innovation Awards Gala.

The 2008 Sara Kirke Award winners were Dale Gantous, CEO, INGenius Group, and Dr. Veena Rewat, President, Communications Research Council.

Sara Kirke is considered by many to be North America's first entrepreneur. Sara Kirke arrived in Newfoundland in 1638 with her husband David Kirke, who was soon recalled to England. Sara, however, continued to reside in Avalon, and conducted business as usual from the Pool Plantation. Lady Kirke was a remarkable individual as she managed affairs at the Pool Plantation and became one of the most successful merchants on the English Shore -- and was almost certainly North America's first and foremost woman entrepreneur.

The Innovation Awards will be presented on May 19th, 2009 in Ottawa at the CATAAlliance Annual Innovation Awards Gala Dinner, a 24 year tradition of recognizing outstanding technological innovation and corporate leadership in expanding the frontiers of Canada's advanced technology industries.
